A History of Graphic Design

Middle Ages

The Middle Ages occurred around 1550 BCE in China, Egypt, Greece and Rome. The illustrated manuscripts led to the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. This book was used as a manual to aid the deceased in the afterlife. This is a superb example of early graphic design. Graphic designs such as this one were made of papyrus (leaves) and parchment (animal skin). Later on the Greek and Latin started to add illustrations along with writing as a contribution to the book production.
